My name is Akua and I’m a Ghanaian Afro-R&B Artist. I was born in Manchester and raised in London. I have the best of both worlds because all of these places are home to me.
I’ve always loved music from a young age, I honestly couldn’t see myself doing anything else. For as long as I can remember I’ve always been musically involved – I started out in my early years in the children’s choir at church. I think that’s where I discovered that I really loved to sing and it’s been a journey ever since.
I knew that performing was something I saw myself doing and I’m glad I never looked back, being a musician in this industry sometimes has its ups and downs but it’s very rewarding.
Not many people know that I’m a songwriter. It’s something I really enjoy aside or my day to day in the studio. The best part about writing my own music is that I have the freedom to say what I want, how I feel, and I get to share it with the world.
I’ve always been a writer, it’s a gift, it’s not something I’ve ever had to learn, it just comes naturally. When I’m writing my songs, there are no limits, I get to have fun with my creativity and that’s how “Motion” came about.
To date, I would say it is my FAVOURITE song. What I like the most about everything behind the scenes of this track was that there wasn’t really a concept or a plan when I was creating it.
It’s funny because usually I have everything all thought out, I like structure, and making sure that everything is well put together, but there was no method to my madness when making Motion. Everything was so impromptu and spontaneous but that’s what made it so fun and enjoyable.
I remember sitting down with MB, my producer and just telling him I don’t have an idea, I don’t know what I want, and I don’t know what direction to go in, and he just said, “lets flow”. And that’s what we did.
What I like the most about working with MB is that he pushes me out of my comfort zone; we’re always trying new sounds and testing out ideas. We started working together in 2015 on my first single “Wo Do Me”, and we’re still at it now. Theres so much in store and I cant wait for you to hear it!
“Motion” isn’t your typical love song, its much more than that, it’s a vibe, its ‘chill’ music, it’s something you can listen to with the windows rolled down in your car, watching the sunset, or even sunbathing on the beach. It fits whatever mood you’re in.
I listen back to it all the time, and I’m just in awe to think that I created this. I love that the melody is so catchy, and the lyrics are so easy to learn.
“Motion” is definitely different to what I’ve done before, my sound and style has changed since I started doing music. I would say that my sound has been heavily influenced over the years.
I grew up listening to both Ghanaian and Nigerian music, from the likes of 4×4 and Ruff and Smooth to the classic “No One Like You” by P-Square. That type of music was timeless and “Motion” is that song; where everyone can listen and relate to it.
I love my African culture and always try to incorporate it in my music, even if it’s a subtle display, you know that it sounds like home. I know you’ll love it as much as I do!
