You will remember Ed Thomas from his 2013 collaborations with the likes of Bondax (“Giving It All”) and Chase & Status (“Blk & Blu”, but before that, he previously worked with Dubstep royalty such as Submotion Orchestra, Planas and Author circa 2011 and 2012. This year however, the London-based singer, songwriter and producer is stepping out firmly on his own two feet as a solo star and if his brand new single “On My Own” is anything to go by, then we are in for a real treat from Mr. Ed Thomas in 2014!
Taking its inspiration from 80’s Disco music, while bringing its modern Pop sensibilities to the forefront, the soulful “On My Own” sees Ed Thomas showcasing his pitch-perfect falsetto, delectably yearning and buttery smooth vocals over a lush bassline, commanding synths and head-bopping drum patterns. Without a question, “On My Own” is one of the best pieces of music you will hear this month, but beyond that, the chorus on this record really does deserve a special mention for its sheer infectiousness, one listen and the listener is left captivated – hook, line and sinker, and we won’t even mention the exquisite songwritine, we’ll let you discover that yourselves.
While comparisons with the likes of Sam Smith, John Newman and several other British male Singer/Songwriters who first make their mark via a guest feature on a producer’s record may abound, Ed Thomas sounds in a very different league all by himself. We obviously shouldn’t judge based off of one single but it is clear to see that this London native is bringing a refreshing and different narrative to this particular class of 2014.
