WPGM Commentary: Chido Mya Longs For True Love On ‘What If I’

Hi, I’m Chido Mya and I’m a singer-songwriter based in Birmingham in the UK. Growing up with a father with a similar love for music, I have always been influenced by him to write songs and record music. The earliest memory I have of myself writing a song was when I was 9-years-old – I was in primary school writing for an easter project.

My new single “What If I” shows a lot of growth in my artistry as it showcases an increasing maturity in my writing style. The song is about romantic trials and tribulations and the longing to find true love.

I worked alongside Manuchie, an international producer based in Zimbabwe, after we connected on social media and we then worked on this track remotely for a solid two months. We were able to create ideas for the song almost instantly.

I guess when you know you know, and with this track we knew it was going to turn out into something great. Working with Manuchie was enjoyable as he is an all-round musician with a good ear for music. He was able to bring out a different potential in me, encouraging me to maximize my skills.

This song is not from a real-life experience, it’s written from the perspective of how I believe I will feel once I find my person. I think I will feel a large sense of gratefulness, reflecting on all the lessons I have had to learn before finding them. I have a big heart so once choose to love someone I love them with everything I have, hence why I sang, “is it okay if I, give you my all“.

This song is relatable to those who have found their soul mate, and those who are waiting for love. I hope this song gives hope to those who don’t believe there is a person for them as I often fear I will never find that unconditional love I strive for.

Writing and recording this song pushed me to be creative and imaginative with my concepts. I wanted the song to feel beautiful and fresh and I enjoyed escaping my reality and daydreaming about this love I still know nothing about.

Though it proves to be difficult being a perfectionist at times this weakness can be a strength. After many edits and numerous recordings, I eventually found myself more than satisfied with the final product. Manuchie was very patient as a producer, he trusted my vision and he helped me bring this track to life.
