WPGM Commentary: Candy Bleakz Embraces The Joy And Pain On ‘Better Days’ EP

Hey, I’m Candy Bleakz, also known as Lady Dragon. My journey began in the bustling streets of Bariga, Lagos, where I spent my early years soaking in the vibrant culture and energy of the city. Around the age of 9 or 10, my family moved to Oworoshoki, and later, I found myself in Ikorodu for a while before eventually striking out on my own.

Music has always been my passion. I started rapping in 2014, performing wherever I could—talent shows, schools, and sharing my verses on social media platforms. It was a raw beginning, fueled by ambition and a drive to express myself through lyrics and beats.

In 2017, a turning point came when I signed my first record deal with Chocolate City, becoming the leading lady of the group Street Billionaires. This opportunity marked a significant milestone in my career, providing me with a platform to amplify my voice and share my story with a wider audience.

The creation of my EP, Better Days, was a deeply personal journey. When I entered the studio, I didn’t have a strict plan in mind. Instead, I wanted to let my emotions guide me, to pour my heart into every lyric and melody. As I worked on each song, a common thread emerged – they all reflected the duality of my feelings.

There was a mix of hope for the future, tinged with the awareness of how far I’d come and the challenges still ahead. This blend of emotions allowed me to weave together songs that resonate with people’s own experiences of pain and joy. My aim with Better Days was to carve out a space for myself in the music scene by creating sounds that are both unique and relatable.

Each track – from the ambitious anthem “Debe,” which speaks of striving beyond my parents’ achievements, to the gritty honesty of “I Don’t Care,” tackling the grind for financial stability – was crafted to inspire self-belief and resilience. The EP encapsulates the belief that while life may throw obstacles our way, embracing both joy and pain is crucial to personal growth and success.

Collaborating with diverse producers was essential to capturing different perspectives and enriching the project. For example, “Celepiano” pays homage to my Cele church background, infusing a personal touch that resonates deeply with those who share similar roots.

Selecting the tracks was an intuitive process, each chosen to complement the EP’s theme and reflect the emotional landscape I navigated during its creation. The title Better Days encapsulates my philosophy—that through perseverance and hard work, brighter times are within reach.

I firmly believe that every achievement is a result of effort, not chance. This mindset permeates every lyric and beat, serving as a reminder that success is earned through dedication and determination. Ultimately, Better Days is more than an EP to me, it’s a reflection of universal human experiences, accessible to all ages and walks of life.

It speaks to the struggles and aspirations we all face, offering a soundtrack to accompany our journeys toward a brighter tomorrow. Whether young or old, rich or poor, the themes embedded in the EP resonate with everyone, reminding us that our dreams are worth pursuing, despite the challenges we encounter along the way.

In essence, Better Days is my story woven into melodies and rhythms—a testament to resilience, hope, and the unwavering belief that hard work is the catalyst for transformation. It’s a celebration of the human spirit’s ability to overcome adversity and embrace the promise of better days ahead.
