WPGM Commentary: Mabs Wants More Out Of Life On ‘Me, Myself And I’

Hey people, my name is Mabs and I am a singer-songwriter from Essex, England. I’d describe my sound as multi-genre, mainly R&B inspired but constantly evolving. “Me, Myself & I” is my third single to date and I was fortunate enough to collaborate with director, Remi Branco under PLUS ANOTHER ONE Productions to create a music video for it.

I first wrote “Me, Myself & I” in May 2023 after experiencing a personal loss. I was mainly rage writing at the time, which is usually my outlet for difficult situations. My songwriting often reflects current situations and emotions experienced. I was feeling super lonely at the time, and I just wasn’t happy with the way I was living my life. So… I wrote about it. “Me, Myself & I” is an ode to wanting more out of life and yearning for self-discovery after the storm has passed.

Whilst the subject matter is pretty sobering, I wanted to ensure the song had a soundtrack feel… stacking lots of layers and harmonies gave it this upbeat yet melancholy feel which juxtaposed the themes of loneliness, pain and freedom. Almost like Paramore’s “Hard times”, it’s fun to listen to and discovering the deeper meaning offers another element to look forward to.

As an independent artist, I didn’t think a music video would be on the horizon for a while, until Remi Branco, who is also a friend from my university days, approached me for a collaboration. Remi is a super talented producer and filmmaker who was looking to diversify her portfolio.

We spoke of my interests, inspirations and what I wanted the video to represent. She loved the song and conceptualised the entire music video in our vision. Following many calls, Remi presented the concept to Jamie McCallum and Clara Stasia of Plus Another One Productions who were happy to take on the project.

Remi Branco was inspired by the harmonies in the track, and the theme of growth in the song. Her comments follow, “The music video follows a road trip with friends and hurdles along the way. A road trip was symbolic of the journey to self-actualisation and Mabs’ commitment to her freedom from pain in her past”.

Remi thought it was the best possible way she could visualise the meaning behind the track, adding that “the harmonies represented a loving community behind Mabs, so including her friends as the co-stars in the music video was a no-brainer […] bringing this to fruition was surprisingly a straightforward journey. Though with its’ challenges, specifically the shooting location and the car itself, the track and video represents a turning point in all women”.

She put it best when she says, “Liberation in the feminine journey; from pain to self-expression. The takeaway is for women in Mabs’ position, to come to themselves, go after what matters to them the most and to consistently consider themselves in the process”.

The entire video was a beautiful group effort. The glam team, BTS and featured actors are all good friends of mine who came together to make the video happen. I was surrounded by friends and professionals who believed in me and were willing to take a chance on me. Quite ironic given the title of the song right?

This is MABS. Watch the video for “Me, Myself & I” below and stream it everywhere else here.
