As we enter into the second half of 2014, here are some of the new British alternative urban records from June that have not only caught my ears but will be on my playlist for many more months to come. Azekel is one of my favourite British artists without question and I am always excited to hear new music from him. His latest which was released earlier this month titled “New Romance” sees Azekel returning to producing his own songs, after collaborating with the likes of Vincent Perez, Blacksmif, Youan and Adelight on his 2013 Circa EP. The return is a welcomed one because “New Romance” is resoundingly brilliant from top to bottom, it will be released on iTunes on July 14 and you can pre-order it here.

Scottish-born singer and songwriter emaé makes her debut on ‘Alternative Sound Selection’ with her excellent new offering titled “Something Beautiful”. Written and composed by emaé herself, and co-produced with New Zealand native Stephen Hay, the record oozes confidence, honesty and a relatability that is rare for newcomers in 2014. Matched with emaé’s captivating vocals and the record’s lush Folk and Soul sensibilities, and you have a winner in my books. Watch the lyric video for “Something Beautiful” below.

Leo Kalyan’s new single titled “Over You”, a collaboration with MNEK and Karma Kid, is one of the best records you will hear in these summer months. Unveiled just in time to coincide with the sunshine, “Over You” is a lush R&B tune with a silky smooth music backdrop and tropical vibe, accompanied by an outstanding vocal display from Leo Kalyan. His voice seduces you while the music makes you want to move as if you’re in a 90’s slow jam video, the combination of which, makes “Over You” a certified jam and a sure-fire inclusion for any summer playlist you are compiling right now.
