Tame Impala – Currents (Album):
Tame Impala are streaming their new album Currents online via CBC music. The Australian band are due to release their third record Currents On July 17 following their critically acclaimed album Lonerism, which was released in 2012. Frontman Kevin Parker spoke to NME and described the album as both “groove-based” and “club-friendly“. Stream Tame Impala’s Currents album here or on NPR.
Continuing on, Parker said, “listening to [our music] was very much a kind of headphone, solitary experience, which is cool, but I’ve moved on from that. I’ve always loved listening to music on my own, but there’s another side of me that is just fascinated by… like Goa trance, for example – just a rave on a beach in India, you know? Where there’s someone that’s spinning the music and it’s just this free-flowing continuous energy. I wanted to make something that from the sound of it could be down at the club, I just realized that I’d never heard Tame Impala played somewhere with a dancefloor or where people were dancing“.
Major Lazer + Ty Dolla $ign – “Lean On (Remix)”:
“Lean On” by Major Lazer and DJ Snake featuring M Ø is probably the biggest summer hit this year so far, and is currently being played in every nightclub. Now, Taylor Gang’s very own Ty Dolla $ign has decided to hop on the remix, by adding a catchy verse to this banger, where he sings about turning on white women with his cars, smoking some weed and basically just enjoying his life to the fullest. The rest of the song remains the same as in the original. Sounds pretty good! Keep an eye on Dolla $ign as his album Free TC is about to drop later this year. Listen to it here.
Finding Novyon + Allan Kingdom – “Lots”:
Finding Noyvon drops a dark bass filled track co-produced by Travis Gorman, and featuring the Kanye West “All Day” collaborator Allan Kingdom who hails from Winnepeg, Canada. He was featured on Complex’s top 25 rappers to watch in 2014 and even featured as City Page’s ‘Best Hip Hop Artist’ in same year. These guys are definitely ones to watch, the catchy hook and stylish flows will be ringing in your ears all day after hearing this, the track falls straight from Noyvon’s upcoming mixtape The Food Network, the Minneapolis rapper/producer is also part of a crew called The Rotation. Listen to “Lots” below.
Laura Marling – “I Feel Your Love (Director’s Cut)”:
Laura Marling has released a deluxe edition of March’s Short Movie, which she has re-named the ‘Director’s Cut’. The digital release features full band recordings of album tracks such as “I Feel Your Love” and “Warrior”, along with “David” and “Daisy”, which were previously 7″ releases only. You can listen to “I Feel Your Love” below.
In a recent press release, Marling commented, “We recorded them this way to honor the alchemical change that occurs within a musical group when you add a new brain or flavor to it. Pete’s style of playing combined with a lack of need to be delicate for the sake of hearing strings led to the tone becoming thicker and grittier. And as an unexpected result, we discovered that we like sticky rhythms…and seem to speak a similar language in rhythm and tone, it’s a very special quite rare thing!”.
Wavves – “Way Too Much”:
After a very public dispute with their record label, Wavves have made their new single “Way Too Much” available to stream early on soundcloud. With lyrics that read like a slacker’s anthem and lo fi, pop-punk hooks, this single points to a promising return for the band after 2013’s Afraid Of Heights and their more recent collaboration with Cloud Nothings.
Wavves’ future with Warner Bros. looks much less rosy after frontman Nathan Williams tweeted “you dont scare me. im not scared of getting dropped or sued by u so what do u have?“. The fallout appears to be a result Warner Bros. trying to heavily edit the songs on their upcoming album V. However Williams seems to have won this round after showing the album cover and threatening to release the rest of the album one month early.
Ciara – “Dance Like We’re Making Love”:
Ciara has been pretty busy lately, be it supporting her new boyfriend Russell Wilson at the ESPY Awards or fulfilling her task as Topshop’s new brand ambassador.
However, she always seems to find time for her music as she has just dropped the visuals for her song “Dance Like We’re Making Love”, off her latest album Jackie. The singer is showing off her amazing dance skills in the Dave Meyers directed video, and seduces the man on her side. Something which should be mentioned is that there’s a lion lying next to the pool Ciara is swimming in… because why not?! Watch it here.
Alice Glass – “Stillbirth”:
Alice Glass has released her first solo single on Soundcloud, since she left Crystal Castles, entitled “Stillbirth”. The single was written by herself and producer Jupiter Keyes. The single will go on sale tomorrow and proceeds from it, will go to victims of domestic abuse, sexual violence and incest. Glass posted a letter on her website explaining the background to the single, excerpts of which are below [full letter here].
“Years ago I began the process of trying to remove myself from an abusive relationship that started when I was a teenager. Over the course of that relationship I was systematically cut off from anyone and everyone that I could truly be close to. I was talked down to, yelled at, locked into rooms and criticized daily about my abilities, my weight, my looks, my intelligence and almost every move I made. When I couldn’t take it anymore and I wanted to end the relationship I was threatened, then I was told I was loved, and the cycle would begin again”.
“Stillbirth was written by myself and Jupiter Keyes in our basement. There is no label involved. It will be available through iTunes, Spotify, etc. beginning July 18. All proceeds for digital purchases of this song will benefit organizations (like the nonprofit RAINN) that help survivors of domestic abuse, sexual violence and incest. You can donate directly to them at https://donate.rainn.org or via the link on my website at http://www.alice-glass.com/. There is a sister song to Stillbirth that I hope to release soon, she is a lullaby and she can’t wait to meet you”.
