27-year old Sevyn Streeter is no stranger to the music scene having been in it since the early 2000’s being a former member of girl groups TG4 and RichGirl. She is by far, one of the hottest R&B/Pop artists we have right now, standing out for how her sensual lush vocals blend so beautifully on her R&B beats, creating memorable songs that will not get out of your head! One of her most memorable, was released last year featuring Chris Brown titled “It Won’t Stop”, it was certainly one of smoothest R&B tracks released in 2013 as the heaven-sent melodies blessed our ears and the lazy Summer strum lured you in, with that song even getting chart recognition on the US Billboard Hot 100 Singles Chart.
Not only an accomplished singer, Sevyn Streeter is also an established songwriter as she has written back to back hit records for the likes of Ariana Grande (her debut hit single “The Way”), her mentor Chris Brown with “Fine China”, Tamar Braxton, Kelly Rowland, Trey Songz, Alicia Keys, Brandy and many more. Sevyn Streeter showcases her unique, engaging vocals on her recently released offering – a remix to her last single “Next” featuring fast-rising L.A rapper Kid Ink – and it is my tip for Best New Music this week.
On “Next”, we see Sevyn talking about the very interesting notion of forever dating the same person, where your ex-boyfriend is your “next” boyfriend, which seems to be the case for a lot of people right now. The songs drifts between chill and electro-R&B vibrations but yet has a very fun symphonic melody with the production embodying a synth-splashed R&B backdrop, which is tasteful and not overproduced by any means. Essentially, the Atlantic Records recording artist Streeter wants her ex back without the bad times and arguments they had within the relationship.
“How can my ex-boyfriend be my next boyfriend?”
She mentions the issues within the failing relationship throughout the song, with damning lyrics like “together, forever / I would never, never let you go / see now soon as we say that, we at war” and “every time we break up / we turn around and we make up / momma wonder when I’m goin’ wake up”. Kid Ink, who has garnered a lot of chart success recently with his Gold-selling single “Show Me”, plays the role of Sevyn’s love interest on the track and takes a nice relaxed approach to the number, offering up two complementing verses that approach the “break up to make up to break up” narrative from a male perspective, creating a really nice collaboration.
Judging by the previous hits Sevyn has given us, we are excited for what else this talented artist is going to bring to us in 2014. Her popular 7-track Call Me Crazy But… EP whcih was released late last year gave fans endless the back to back hits and is only a little taste of what they can expect from her debut LP set to be released sometime this year. She is unquestionably one of the most promising R&B Divas on the rise, so watch out for her! The original version of “Next” can be found on Streeter’s Call Me Crazy, But EP which is available for digital purchase on iTunes.
