Singer/Songwriter Alyxx Dione’s new album titled September dropped in my inbox on the first day of the month and being a September baby, I was very eager to listen. Known popularly for her YouTube uploaded covers to chart topping hits such as “Best I Ever Had” (Drake), “Russian Roulette” (Rihanna), “Run The World” (Beyonce) and “Do It Like a Dude” (Jessie J) to name a few, Alyxx has managed to gain quite a fan base for herself. Even more recently, after covering one of this year’s most re-made tracks – Drake’s “Marvin’s Room” – her recognition grew even bigger. Her version ranks as one of the best I’ve heard, overshadowing top artists who also attempted the song. This newly found spotlight couldn’t have been a better time for Alyxx to drop her free debut album September.
New York native, Alyxx currently resides in Los Angeles, California where she’s pursuing a musical path instead of a career in fashion designer which was the earlier plan/dream and she lists notable female artists such as Aaliyah, Lauryn Hill, Mary Mary and Destiny’s Child as her musical influences and inspiration. She began writing and producing all on her own at the age of 11 so it’s really no surprise that all the tracks on the album September were written and mixed byAlyxx herself plus she also designs the artwork for her album September. This album serves as a medium for Alyxx to connect with her fans as the 9 songs featured on September all tell their own story of series of events that have happened in Alyxx’s young life. Her soft angelic vocals resonate well on this debut album and the sky’s the limit for this young artist.
This next track “Dysfunctional” kind of crept up on me and I found myself hitting replay every time this one came on. The simplicity to the song draws you in first as it is backed majorly by an acoustic guitar. Hints of a violin can also be heard in the backdrop lingering perfectly as these stringed instruments put together in harmony back the story of a dysfunctional love. Again, a true narrative draws up the emotion that Alyxx’s fans can relate to as she sings, “we can break up and come back to each other our dysfunctional love”. I think it’s funny that so many girls would be able to relate to this track, but remember dysfunctional isn’t always good – listen below to the beautifully crafted and beautifully sung acoustic ballad.
The third and final track I plug is the album’s title-track “September” and the song continues on the theme from previous track you just heard, “Dysfunctional”. This to me is the most aptly put together song on the whole album as the lyrics of reminiscing back to a time when life was good with a significant other is accompanied by lush soft drum kicks and ample guitar plucks. The track lives somewhere between the Pop and R&B genres and the laid back recording works for good listening fit for any time of the day, week or month. Her vocals exude sincerity and the instrumentals are of world-class production. I’ll let this one sell itself, check out the awesome track below.
The album’s 9 tracks flow beautifully in a personal story-like form as Alyxxmentioned it narrates her life’s events. Asides the tracks we’ve plugged to you above, the album opener “Girlfriend” and “Easy” are also top songs to check out, while the chirpy track “Pursuit of Happiness” with its slight upbeat tempo and message serves as an ideal way to end the album. I loved the album for its open sincerity, meaningfulness and that it’s filled with emotion. September has great likeable appeal and Alyxx’s take on Pop music is one that fits her vocal style very well. I also can’t help but wonder if it features only 9 tracks as its aptly titled after the 9th month. Whichever way, do your ears a favor by downloading the easy-listening album below. According to Alyxx Dione, “Music is my passion and one of the many ways I express myself”. We say go right ahead Ms. Dione, we’re 100% listening.
