WPGM Reviews: DIIV Live At The Observatory (In Pictures)

On June 27, 2024, San Diego was treated to the ethereal sounds of DIIV after a long hot sunny day. This indie rock band, known for their dreamy melodies and introspective lyrics, delivered a performance that captivated the audience from start to finish. The band is fresh off the release of a new album Frog In Boiling Water, which was released on May 24, 2024 via Fantasy Records.

DIIV began their tour on June 6, 2024 in Santa Cruz, California and will be on tour across the country ending Aug 7 in Brooklyn before they head to South America, Mexico and then travel overseas to Europe until mid December – see the rest of their tour dates here.

The Observatory, packed with eager fans ranging from longtime devotees to newcomers discovering the band’s unique sound, was a testament to DIIV’s enduring appeal over the years. The concert began with a soft cascade of guitar chords, gradually building into the hauntingly beautiful tunes that have become the band’s signature.

Tracks like “Doused” and “Under the Sun” transported listeners into a sonic landscape where shimmering guitars intertwined with hypnotic rhythms, creating a sense of introspection and reverie. The band’s cohesion was evident as they navigated through their repertoire, seamlessly blending elements of shoegaze, dream pop, and post-punk into a cohesive sonic tapestry.

The visual aspect of the concert was equally mesmerizing. Subtle lighting and projections complemented the music, casting shadows and colors that enhanced the ethereal atmosphere of the performance. The audience, swaying in unison to the music’s rhythmic pulse, seemed entranced by the immersive experience DIIV offered.

DIIV’s concert in San Diego on June 27, 2024, was a wonderful experience that showcased the band’s ability to create a mesmerizing sonic journey, playing their known tracks while supporting and showcasing the new album. DIIV proved once again why they are celebrated as one of the most innovative and captivating bands to see in a live setting.
